In order to enable to share information about DO-178B
and its updated version, DO-178C (predictably in 2011), I will try to share my
personal experiences and the other sector experts’ experiences in this blog. If
you want, for our visitors new and off the topic, let’s explain what DO-178B
states exactly.
This guide is recommended to software developers,
loaders, and users for RTCA/DO-178B aircrafts with the form in FAA (Federal
Aviation Administration) directive. I say “recommended” because contrary to common
belief it doesn’t state any enforcements and obligations. In guide, the reason
of that imperative words/sentences stating obligation such as “shall” and
“must” are not involved in.
DO-178B is like outline for steps of developing
software such as confirmation, enabling, documentation, configuration
management, and quality management. (Yes, it may seem familiar, it has same
content with CMMI’s.) To sum up, DO-178B is a guide document where it is
suggested seriously to be developed in the guidance of where FAA avionic
softwares despite that it is not necessary to FAA certification, and where
current and coming avionic designs are used commonly.
Coming days ( and while occasion ) I will try to
address and explain software developing steps in the guidance of D0-178B.
